The Grammar School

Mrs. Brown helping student

Veritas Academy bases its educational framework upon the classical Trivium. According to the Trivium, a child's educational development is divided into three stages: the grammar stage, the logic stage and the rhetoric stage. The grammar stage corresponds roughly to the student's elementary years.

It is at this stage that the student learns the "grammar" or basic facts of each of the academic disciplines. For example, in math, he learns about numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; in language, he learns about letters, spelling rules, grammar rules, and vocabulary; and in history, he learns about famous people, dates, places and quotes. Since children at this stage have a wonderful capacity to memorize, they are taught to memorize many facts. In summary, the main goal of Veritas during the grammar school years is to teach students the basic building blocks that they will need for further learning in the future. To that end we have built a grammar curriculum that are 1) systematic and rigorous; 2) filled with good and great literature; and 3) full of memorization of the "grammar" of each subject. A student who has completed our grammar curriculum will be equipped to enter into the second level of the Trivium: the logic stage.
