Elective Classes

Among the questions sometimes raised by parents is that of why they should consider putting their children in a small school with limited facilities and programs like Veritas?  Won’t their children miss out on things that are important?  Will their children one day feel cheated?

Large, conventional schools can and often do offer a wide variety of extracurricular programs.  Being neither large nor conventional, we begin addressing the question of extracurricular activities by reminding parents that they are the primary educators of their children.  Veritas Academy’s mission is to assist them in that task.  In this way we share many of the values of homeschoolers, noting that the independence and flexibility of homeschooling has given some students a richer and more rewarding ‘extracurricular’ experience than they could have received at a large school.  The success of homeschoolers in extracurricular activities is noteworthy in such arenas as the National Spelling Bee, in which they have placed consistently among the top finishers.  The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner (the nation’s top college football player) Tim Tebow, was homeschooled prior to his college career.

We take our cue from homeschoolers by thinking creatively together with our families about how our children can become involved in the extracurricular activities best suited for them.  For certain programs, we’ve formed our own clubs and teams.  In other cases, we’ve formed alliances with local institutions and clubs, which has had the added benefit of involving our students in the broader community.  Below is a list of what we currently offer.
